“Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathic witness”.
WHAT IS EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is considered the ‘gold standard’ treatment for trauma and PTSD. It is widely used in the NHS, private sector and all around the world. It is quite different from many other approaches in psychotherapy, in that it works more directive and structured so that we can process trauma and decrease emotional responses to triggers. EMDR is an evidence-based therapy for PTSD and is a powerful treatment for individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, and trauma. For more information about the details of EMDR click here.
EMDR is safe and effective during pregnancy, even when the time frame is limited. Learn more here:
WHAT ARE EMDR INTENSIVES?
EMDR Intensive Therapy allows you to condense your therapy and progress into a shorter time space of time. Instead of going to weekly sessions for months, treatment occurs in 3-5 hour increments for 1-5 sessions per week. For clients who have a limited time frame, this could be most appropriate, e.g. approaching the third trimester and wanting to process previous birth trauma so that they can enter labour without PTSD symptoms. Equally, for clients who are keen to process trauma and want to condense treatment, this may be beneficial too. Typically, clients experience a significant reduction in symptoms after the first re-processing session. EMDR Intensives are suitable for those who have experienced past trauma(s) and are ready to overcome the intense emotions, physical sensations, distress and difficulties associated with the trauma(s). I am a mind-body therapist, which means that I incorporate somatic, creative and body-based exercises and activities into sessions so that my clients fully process the trauma they’ve experienced on a deeper level. We understand from research that the residual effects of trauma move around the body and are experienced in illness, disease and dysfunction - together we will process this so you can live a life full of joy and free from suffering.
If you have a history of complex trauma or dissociation, EMDR intensives may not be the best treatment for you. Research has shown that clients with complex trauma histories find long-term therapy more beneficial. We can talk about what has happened to you, how you are feeling, and the impact on your life so that we can decide together which is the best treatment option for you. Your voice and your choice will be listened to, respected and heard. You matter; let’s work together to reach your goals.
